CHOLUTECA HOUSEHOLD WATER TREATMENT,

SANITATION AND HYGIENE PROJECT

ROTARY CLUB OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS

This project provides clean water, sanitation, and proper hygiene education and techniques to 165 families in 4 communities in the department of Choluteca, Honduras.  This will be accomplished by providing biosand filters and latrines to each household, giving hygiene and sanitation workshops, and training of community water boards, hygiene committees and community agents; all critical components to a successful and sustainable project.

The project will be structured to focus on capacity building of the community leaders and community agents to deal with challenges that will continue to arise in the future.  It will focus on education in health and hygiene.

Outputs:

In 4 communities in the department of Choluteca:

  • install 165 biosand filters
  • construct 165 latrines
  • deliver 3 workshops on hygiene and sanitation in each community
  • provide water and sanitation facilities and hygiene education at the schools
  • provide de-parasite medicine for each beneficiary
  • train water and hygiene committee members and community stewards
 

Outcomes:

  • Safe, clean water, sanitation and good hygiene will all contribute to lower incidences of diarrheal disease which leads to improved & more productive lives
  • Conditions for a sustainability are built into the project via:
    • Use of appropriate technology
    • Community ownership and participation
    • Building of expertise of local committees
    • User education and project follow-up

November 15, 2008 ●  Commitments of $35,837 from Rotary Clubs other donors and District 5010 obtained
December 8, 2008 ●  Matching grant application is approved by District 5930 for requested $20,000 DDF funds
October 2009 ●  Rotary Foundation approval of $25,000 Matching Grant
February 2010 ●  12 month project commences after Rotary Foundation Grant funded
January 15-23, 2011 ●  Work study trip to Honduras sponsored by Rotary Club of Corpus Christi
TBD [June 2011 (?)] ●  Complete Project
